Flowers amongst the weeds
It’s amazing how much of the day’s email is pure junk.
Fortunately, we have spam filters to help us separate the worthwhile from the worthless.
Sorting through the digital junk is easy in comparison with sorting through the physical junk in our lives.
You know – the stuff we’ve been acquiring over a lifetime.
Some of it is long past its expiration date, hidden in the pantry or the fridge.
Plenty more is sequestered in closets, filing cabinets and basements. All of it evidence of what great consumers we are.
If you’re like me, you may even have forgotten most of what’s been accumulated.
Heck, we could feed and clothe a small village with the stuff tucked away in our house. How about you?
Maybe it’s time to do ourselves a favor by divesting of those things which, realistically, we are never going to use..
In doing so, we can simplify life a bit and open up some space (literally and figuratively) for cultivating relationships, creative pursuits and spontaneous adventures – things which matter more in the grand scheme of life.
As the bumper sticker says so well: “The best things in life are not things”.
Here’s what I’m going to do, starting today, as a way of walking my talk:
I’m going to allocate 15 minutes of each day to sort through my stuff, weeding out anything which has ceased to serve any purpose in my life.
If you too are looking for less baggage and more freedom, I encourage you to join me in the start of this new, healthy habit.
Even if you only have 5 minutes a day to devote to the cause, I think you’ll find it worth the effort because you’ll see dividends (tangible and psychic) within a week.
Keep the flowers, toss the weeds!
